Stockholm has great restaurants which pair delicious food with an great wine list, but drinking wine outside of meals, as is so often done in Southern Europe, is less common, and it can be difficult to find a glass of good wine on its own. However, wine bars are gaining in popularity and there are now some very fine establishments for the wine aficionados among us. Here we explore the very best the city has to offer.

Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town, can seem like just another tourist trap in terms of eating and shopping but this impression could not be more wrong. Indeed, it is chock full of trendy places even locals enjoy visiting. One of these is Gaston, a wine bar that can boast the expertise of five experienced sommeliers. The wine list is varied, with a large selection of Californian wines, creative Roussillon bottles and some classic Bourgogne appellations like Pouilly-Fussé or Chablis. The interior is typically Scandinavian, slick, practical, and aesthetically pleasing.

2. Glas

Yet another wine bar in Gamla Stan, definitely the place to find good wine – 19 Glas is small and cozy but has an impressive selection. It’s the perfect setting to sample a few glasses from a wide range of wine-producing regions. Why not try a sparkling wine from Australia like a 2009 Armilla Blanc de Blancs instead of Champagne. Tourists will have the occasion to try Swedish wines, for better or for worse and the food is also very good.

3. Eriks Vinbar

Cafe, Restaurant, Contemporary, Swedish

Part of the sumptuous restaurant Eriks Gondolen in Södermalms, Eriks Vinbar is a true institution among Swedish wine enthusiasts. Because of the link with the restaurant, the wine list includes some incredible names like Château Mouton Rothschild, Margaux, Veuve Clicquot, and more. The wine list is gigantic, with a good selection available by the glass. To assist with tasting, there is a smaller glass size (five centilitres), which give visitors the opportunity to taste as many wines as possible without breaking the bank.

4. The Burgundy

Bar, Swedish

As its name indicates, The Burgundy is all about wine from the French region of Burgundy, famous for pinot noir and chardonnay wines with well-known appellations like Meursault and Fleurie. These and many more can be found in this charming ‘wine library’ with a small but ever-changing by-the-glass wine list which is updated daily, and French delicacies like pâté and cheese. There are also always a few bottles from other regions or even countries on the daily list, for example from South Africa, Bordeaux, or Portugal. The bar will also organize custom wine-tasting sessions.
